The Daily Schedule

Interest Groups

Interest Groups is a time for campers to learn and hone their outdoor living skills. It takes place from 9:45 -11:15 am. most mornings. Nature, Campcraft, Swimming, Canoeing, and Leadership are our focus.

As campers acquire skills in these areas they can achieve their Turtle, Fox, and Eagle crests. Campers are encouraged to follow their own interests, play to their strengths, explore new learning opportunities, and are free to choose their Interest Group area every day.

  • Nature

Stars, Weather Animals, Minerals, Plants: and Ecology. Learning about Nature leads to environmental stewardship and respect for the natural world. Campers learn about the environment, stars and constellations, weather, animals, rocks and minerals, and indigenous flora and fauna.

  • Campcraft

Learning how to live comfortably and safely in the out-of-doors is the focus of Campcraft. From useful knots to pitching a tent, to cooking over a fire in the rain, campers gain skills and confidence when living and playing in the out-of-doors.

  • Swimming

Being confident and comfortable in the water is an important life skill and a focus at Tawingo. From qualified instructors, Campers of all levels can improve their swimming and lifesaving skills at our Waterfront.

  • Advanced Swimming

National Lifesaving Society courses (Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Emergency First Aid) are available to interested campers of appropriate ages.

  • Boating

Fostering a lifelong joy of paddling a canoe is a cornerstone of Tawingo’s boating program. Campers learn the care and handling of the paddle and canoe, straight line travel techniques, sudden turns, canoe over canoe rescue, solo strokes, and portaging.

Kayak and Sailing instruction are also offered as well as recreational use of all watercraft.

Free Time

Three times a day, campers are free to go to any area in Camp to play, learn, compete, or practice their skills. At these times our areas are fully staffed to accommodate any number of campers and any type of activity offered.

Program

Afternoon & Evening Programs

These programs, unique to Camp Tawingo, take the form of age-specific, active, wide games that counsellors design for their campers. They are often tied to themes and involve elaborate stories, amazing costumes, props, music, and more. Our campers consistently rate these experiences as one of the best things about Camp, and may not notice how much they learn about cooperation, fair play, team work, and leadership in the process.

Outtrips

All of our campers (and counsellors) participate in overnight trips away from their cabins.  Our youngest campers hike to on-site outtrip locations, and our oldest campers travel to Algonquin Park for 2-3 night canoe trips.

Voyageur Adventure & Wilderness Journey

The VA and WJ are 15-day canoe trips to North-Western Quebec for campers who have attained a Fox Crest and who are 14-16 years of age. Campers are invited to apply for these “trip-of-a-lifetime” wilderness experiences that are the culmination of the outdoor and leadership skills learned during their summers at Camp Tawingo. The memories and friendships formed on these trips endure forever.

Tawingo Leadership Course (TLC)

A full summer leadership program designed for campers who are at least 16 years of age and have obtained a Fox Crest. Its purpose is to train campers for the very important role of being a staff member at Tawingo. Participants hone their outdoor living skills, learn to teach these same skills to campers, help with the leadership and programming of campers, and attend workshops that build meaningful leadership skills. Invitations to apply to the TLC are extended to campers who meet the above criteria.

“I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful camp experience for our son. He obviously had the most amazing time and we feel grateful to have discovered Tawingo. He adores you all and we are so glad he found a home away from home.”

“I want to say thank you. We love Tawingo, not only because it’s a great camp run by wonderful people, but also because it has presented such great opportunities for our son to grow as a man, a leader, a teacher, and human being.”
